Striking a Work/Life Balance in a Digitally Connected World

The subject of work/life balance has become a much-discussed topic in recent years as we become more and more accessible at all hours of the day and night. More professionals feel compelled to work late, work early, and work on the weekends to prove their loyalty and commitment. They also want to advance to the next level in their careers. Yet, more people are reflecting on what it takes to have a sense of inner calm and fulfillment and still have a rewarding career.

There is no way around the fact that there are work-related issues that require immediate attention regardless of whether you’re at the office or at home. While these circumstances cannot be avoided altogether, they can be minimized. Here are some tips to create more work/life balance.

Develop a hobby that does not involve your job.

Develop a hobby that has meaning for you and is independent of work-related influences and people. The nice part about a hobby is that it requires your full attention during the time you’re working at it which takes your mind off your job.

Regularly attend a recreational cultural or social event that isn’t work related.

Take the time to go to an event just for fun and entertainment. This gives you something to look forward to during the week and completely takes the attention off corporate responsibilities for the duration. Attending work-related social events doesn’t count!

Develop an individual identity other than your corporate position.

Whether its music, art, writing or an extreme sport, define yourself as something other than the position you hold. You will discover that as an individual you are far more than a professional while finding your true potential as just an ordinary human being.

Focus on self-care.

An important aspect of creating balance is making sure you make the time to take good care of yourself. This means exercise such as yoga, weight-lifting, or even just walking in the park. It may also mean taking time for massage, meditation, or reading a good book. Plain old rest and relaxation also goes a long way toward feeling a sense of renewal. Making space for quiet time and caring for your own needs can be difficult, especially for those who are always on the go and taking care of others. Yet, making yourself a priority can have a serious positive impact on your well-being.

Professionals across all sectors have unique headaches that can often follow you home. Many times, you don’t really have the luxury of leaving the office at work the minute you arrive home. Yet there are many practical steps you can take to ensure that you have a rich and fulfilling life outside of work.
